Pied à Terre, Soho, New York

Art Collector's Apartment

Upon first inspection, I found this apartment, with its stark white walls and light oak flooring, cold and impersonal. The floor-to-ceiling steel windows contributed to the unfriendly ambiance, even though I was asked to design around a unique contemporary art collection. Through the implementation of a warmer palette, derived from the exterior brick walls of Soho, I used the finest linen to cover all the walls as backdrop. I redesigned the lighting plan to illuminate the art throughout. The particularly long hallway posed a challenge, which I solved through the use of mirrors to reflect painting and sculptures, while creating dimension and volume. Darker floors and different wood species created the additional warmth and variety needed.
